Hermit Crab upgrading and moving house

It's been great painting some sea life creatures again, as most of my spirit animals have been from dry land. Hermit Crabs are quite fascinating creatures to observe. They can move quite quickly across different surfaces and don't seem to get phased. I love that they upgrade their residence when they outgrow their environment by moving into a discarded shell from a previous occupant instead of growing a new shell. The word 'hermit' conjures up a lonely crab going about its business oblivious to the rest of the world, but it couldn't be further from the truth. They love companionship and to be part of a community. But they do need their own space to rejuvenate. Protection is very important to them too. They will always stand their ground when in danger, so having a safe space to retreat to is quite essential.

‘When its time for a new beginning, Hermit Crab guides us to seek a strong, comfortable space to rejuvenate and find solace until difficulties pass.
We can still be sociable and appreciative of those we love..’

'Spirit of Hermit Crab' is an oil painting on 20x20 cm stretched canvas with painted wraparound edges. It is available as a Limited Edition Giclée Print and Greeting Card. Merchandise will follow soon.

I really enjoyed working with fiery reds and oranges and building up textures on the canvas with cool and warm hues. The red colours remind me of the base chakra, and how important it is to create security, built on strong foundations.
