Prickly exterior but so cute!

Growing up, we were so lucky to have a little hedgehog that visited our garden. We would put out a little food and water for it. They are such fascinating creatures. Our cats never went near the hedgehog.. they were too smart to be caught unawares by their prickles.

It was a lovely painting to do. I love autumn leaves and woodland with its’ rich textures and colours. Hedgehogs have such soulful eyes and fluffy faces in spite of their spikes which gives a sharp contrast to their spikes. It was fun building up the textures with a palate knife and thick paint which extends into the sides of the canvas to continue its' tactile quality.

‘Hedgehog teaches us to never underestimate a sweet, calm disposition for weakness. Hedgehog has a powerful defence system when appearing to retreat into a ball and frequently emerges victorious from an attack. It’s nocturnal vision and intuition helps hedgehog to manoeuvre unseen in the dark.’

Oil painting on a 20x20 cm stretched canvas.

Available as an giclée limited edition print on A4 archival paper with pigment inks and a 6x6” blank greetings card.
