Painting the octopus

Some of you may chuckle when you see the topic of this painting. I chuckled a few times whilst painting the gracefully moving arms and bulbous head. Octopus are fascinating to watch as they propel themselves forwards and have a beautiful range of hues and tones in their skin. I decided to use a gentle background to complement their colours.

Octopus medicine is just as intriguing. They are intelligent and move swiftly and efficiently. Octopus can carefully camouflage themselves to blend into the surroundings, patiently waiting for the perfect time to pounce on their prey. Octopus can also emit clouds of black ink which disorient and confuse predators. Octopus are found in the South and West of the British Isles and can grow to around 1.3 metres long and weight up to 10kg.

The nature spirit totem meaning is

'Octopus are flexible, astute and efficient in accomplishing their goals, and teach us that sometimes it is better to blend in with the crowd and camouflage our true intentions until the very last moment.’

'Spirit of Octopus' is an original oil painting on 20 x 20 x 1.5cm stretched canvas with painted wraparound edges. It is available as a Limited Edition Giclée Print and blank Greeting Card and merchandise will be available soon.
