Learning from the leadership of Stag

Growing up around Tonbridge meant that I was able to enjoy the magical grounds at Noel Park near Sevenoaks. I can recall the wonder as a child, seeing deer for the first time observing me from behind the trees, but letting me know of their presence. Here around Ashdown Forest, deer often leap across the roads with such power and unpredictability – often chased by others that bound across with full confidence of their safety. Their meaning for me is that...

‘Stag teaches how to lead a herd with grace and diplomacy, without domination or oppression. Guiding with gentle assertiveness and kindness. He observes with curiosity from a distance before leaping across your path at great velocity – forcing you to be vigilant and expand your peripheral vision to see the wider picture. Stags shed their antlers each year, reminding us that change is a natural cycle of rebirth.’

This is my last winter artwork for the nature spirit series. It is has been so amazing to observe and paint these beautiful creatures that we are so lucky to enjoy in our magical islands of Great Britain. I also love working on these smaller scale canvases. There will be more nature spirits to come, but for now I will be working on finishing my large scale children's piece... Watch this space!
