When you are a child, the world around you is so enchanting and full of wonder. I recall picking dandelion clocks and blowing the seeds into the air and my grandparents sharing with me that fairies tell the time by how many blows it takes to remove all the seeds. Also, that everything has its time and you can help nature along the way by throwing a few seeds here and there. Who knows where they may land and take root. It was this that inspired me to base my second Spring fairy painting on fairy timekeeping!
The ladybirds going about their work represent protection, healing, good fortune, and grace in Native American spirituality as it is a very spiritual animal that often protects plants and flowers from pests and other bugs to help them thrive. Dandelions are known too for their healing properties.
I had great fun painting the dandelion clock. First I created an underpainting with the sky and land and then let the canvas dry out thoroughly.
I used a small fan brush to create the fluffy seeds by using dry white paint applied with the lightest touch.
Then I created the fairy by slowly building up layers of paint. The foliage and flowers were very easy to create and the paint for the dandelion petals were applied loosely and thickly to create texture and movement.
I am really pleased with the dandelion clock and could happily indulge in creating a whole field of them now.
If you feel inclined - have a go too. It's such great therapy to connect with your inner child and let it come out to play! :D In our busy lives, we don't do enough of this and miss out on so much wonder.
Although I have created fairies that look quite human in many of my paintings, when you see fairies psychically in nature they seem to be pearlescent in colour and dart around very very quickly which is why they can appear as small orbs. Their wings whir so fast they are quite a blur. From a further distance they can also be seen as lights darting around in the sunlight, which is so joyful to witness. I have seen several sizes from flower fairies at 2mm to larger ones at one inch. Flower fairies will come up very close to my eyes and with a dark background they can be seen much better. Just a little psychic insight I wanted to share with you. If you have experiences, please let me know about them. I'd love to hear them.
